I watched Perkins @ Marlow this evening and here’s what I got out of it. Perkins (team not restaurant) beat Marlow 34-21. Sophomore running back Braiton Applegate ran back the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and from then on the game was over pretty much. Coach Dawayne Hudson and what he describes as a "three-headed monster" racked up 345 yards on the ground Friday night. The "monster" is made up of Applegate, Beck Smith and Tre Stevenson. Stevenson had 138 yards on 28 carries, averaging almost 5 yards/carry.
"The monster is growing," Coach Hudson said, "...Our offense is still finding ways to put defenses in binds. I though they did a great job of mixing it up in the formation department, and out pace was really good. We kept them off balance, and we wore them down."
Those types of statements from coaches are ones where the coach is satisfied with was his team has done. Three games into the season isn't the time to sit back and admire your work, it's time to identify problems, fix things here and there and not let your team get too much of a big head. Calling your running backs a "three-headed monster" is just eyewash and a means of trying to instill confidence in your team. Doing this so early in the year tells me that he is preparing himself for some painful losses later in the season when his "monster" gets what all monsters get in every movie or show you've ever seen. You know it's true, the monster always gets destroyed at the end of the movie, and I think that end is going to be Friday night. Here are my takeaways from the game:
1. Marlow is not very good.
2. We can definitely win this game.
3. If the line contains Tre Stevenson, he won’t be a threat - especially since he can only play a few plays then is out of breath and sits awhile.
4. He can be trouble as a DE for our OT’s. But, again, he has no stamina and doesn’t play every snap.
5. Their defense is porous and we can move the ball with the right play calling.
6. Avoid turnovers and special teams mistakes, we win handily.
