KHS Basketball Madness

On November 1 at 7:30, I predict that 99.9% of the population in Kingfisher will be at the APB building for the Kingfisher Basketball Madness.

While enjoying coffee, cigars and scotch with Porterhouse this morning, we were discussing what to expect from this year's celebration. Never being one to speculate on such things, I decided to go straight to the source and asked some of the boys' basketball team for some inside information.

Drake, Jud, Maddox, Cash, Xavier, and Caden (aka "Kitch") were kind enough to answer our queries.

Basically, I was just looking for information as to what additional items would be held other than those listed which are:

  1. Player Introductions

  2. 3 Point Contest

  3. HS Girls and Boys Scrimmage

  4. HS Cheer Performance

  5. JH Girls and Boys Practice

The first question I posed to the mighty Jackets was why no listing about a dunk contest, was everyone not willing to try to challenge Drake "Hops for Days" Friesen? X replied back quickly that they would definitely be dunking on Tuesday night. Drake said that he wasn't sure why the contest wasn't listed on the advertisement but that this year's should be better than last because we have a couple guys that can really get up there.

Cash and Maddox said they were one of those guys, we shall see. Newly signed SofaKing athlete, Jud Birdwell said in an effort to not embarrass his teammates he may sit out the contest.

Addy Matthews is the leading candidate to win the 3-point shootout, and the players were hesitant to say whether or not she could replicate the performance turned in by one Larry Joe Bird when he won the 1988 All Star contest without even removing his warm-up jacket.

The Jackets were also asked if possibly the player introductions might be similar to what was seen last weekend at the Jackson State University football homecoming entrance by the JSU players. The football team ran onto the field while fireworks were shot off, a rapper firing up the crowd, as well as a dance by head coach, Coach Prime- Deion Sanders. The team agreed that it would be a pretty cool way to open the night so I pressed to see which of the three coaches would be the best dancer. Drake said, and Kitch agreed, he has actually seen Coach Reese get down and the best song would be "Teach Me How to Dougie". Cash brought up that Coach Combs performing his "low hanging fruit celly", stressing that it was something that the world should see because it is a national treasure to which the boys all agreed.

At last year's Madness, t-shirts were thrown into the crowd as the players entered and I asked if we could expect more of the same, they were hesitant to reply. Because of that I made the suggestion that perhaps this year they could throw out rally towels. I said I could contact our merch department and have some printed that we provide during games for the benefit of our opponents who will most likely be leaving in tears due to the utter devastation they just received by the combined efforts of the Jacket squads. Early caption ideas are "Don't Cry. It's Not Like You Were Going To Win Anyway", "They Hate Us Cause They Ain't Us", and "Work Hard, Maybe You Can Play Us Again At The Big House".

Then the big question came up, what were their thoughts about the news from 4A Douglass adding a new head coach (father of a dominant player at Heritage Hall with the initials T.A.) as well as a highly rated transfer from Del City.

As expected, your Champions are taking it all in stride and will primarily let their play on the court give their responses, but a few soundbites were that they found it kind of funny how people are making drastic moves in an effort to take the title this year. They stated how the Jackets' team chemistry will be much stronger than their opponents because they have been ruling the court together since the 2nd grade and that quite frankly, people gearing up in such ways adds fuel to an already blazing fire.

Needless to say, Sofies- the Jackets won't be intimidated or bullied on the court. We left the conversation at that as they were off to classes and things that high school seniors do during the week.

So, if you are like me and are practically chomping at the bit for the season to begin, rest assured that on Tuesday night we will get our first taste of what's to come. I hope to see you all there at 7:30 in the APB.
